Legacy System Integration

Connecting legacy systems that lack modern APIs, such as old ERPs, mainframes, AS/400 applications and in-house databases, to newer applications using database access, change data capture, messaging, file exchange or automation.

Enterprise Platforms & Integration Service capability

Capability overview

What legacy system integration involves

Legacy systems often hold the most valuable data in the organisation, yet they were built before APIs were common. Replacing them may be years away, while new mobile apps, portals and analytics platforms need their data now. Legacy system integration builds safe bridges without destabilising systems that still run core operations.

Techniques depend on what the system allows: read-only database views, change data capture with tools such as Debezium or Oracle GoldenGate, message queues, flat file exports, vendor connectors for mainframe and IBM i, and as a last resort robotic process automation through the user interface. An API facade then gives modern applications a clean interface.

Legacy System Integration delivery workshop

What is included

Integration techniques

API facades

Modern REST APIs placed in front of legacy functions so new applications never depend on legacy internals.

Change data capture

Database changes streamed to other systems in near real time without modifying legacy application code.

Mainframe and IBM i connectivity

Access to CICS transactions, DB2 data and RPG programs through supported connectors and messaging.

File-based integration

Scheduled exports and imports with validation, reconciliation and alerting when files are late or malformed.

Interface automation

Robotic process automation for systems offering no other access, with monitoring for screen changes.

How we work

How we deliver legacy system integration

Legacy access assessment

Available interfaces, database structures, load limits and support constraints reviewed with system owners.

Technique selection

Least invasive technique chosen that meets latency, volume and reliability needs.

Facade and adapter build

Adapters and API facades developed with caching or throttling to protect the legacy system.

Load and impact testing

Integration tested under expected volumes to confirm the legacy system's performance is unaffected.

Operational handover

Monitoring and runbooks delivered, with legacy support staff briefed on the new dependencies.

Related capabilities

Related capabilities in Enterprise Platforms & Integration

Enterprise Data Integration

Keeping operational master and reference data, such as customers, products, suppliers, locations and employees, consistent across ERP, CRM, e-commerce and other business systems through synchronisation and matching rules.

Enterprise Content Management

Document and records management for the organisation, covering capture, classification, version control, approvals, retention, search, e-signatures and secure sharing across SharePoint, M-Files, OpenText or Alfresco.

Custom Enterprise Platforms

Internal platforms that provide shared foundations, such as identity, workflow, notifications, documents, reporting and integration, on which several business applications are built faster and more consistently.

Enterprise Application Integration

An integration architecture for the whole organisation, deciding how ERP, CRM, HR, finance, operational and SaaS systems exchange data, which platform carries it, and how interfaces are governed and monitored.

Questions & answers

Ask a question

Read-only access through views or replicas is usually safe when load is controlled. Writing directly to legacy tables bypasses business rules and is avoided unless the vendor supports it.
