What enterprise architecture involves
Large organisations accumulate overlapping applications, conflicting data sources and technologies nobody chose deliberately. Enterprise architecture provides the map: which systems support which capabilities, where data is mastered, which technologies are standard, and how the landscape should evolve.
We use practical techniques from TOGAF and ArchiMate without heavy bureaucracy: capability maps, application portfolio assessments, data ownership models and a target architecture with transition states. Architecture governance is lightweight, with a review board that helps projects make consistent decisions quickly rather than blocking them. The repository is handed to internal owners with a simple update routine, because an architecture model that stops being maintained loses its value within a year.

Open tools such as Archi suit smaller teams, while LeanIX, Ardoq or Bizzdesign suit organisations maintaining large repositories with many contributors. Spreadsheets are fine for a first pass.
