Functional Testing
Verification that each feature behaves according to requirements and business rules, across user roles, data conditions, validations, calculations and workflows, before it reaches users.
Capability overview
What functional testing involves
Functional testing answers a direct question: does the software do what it is supposed to do? That includes the obvious happy path and everything around it: invalid inputs, permission boundaries, rounding in financial calculations, date and time zone handling, status transitions and messages shown when something goes wrong.
Testers derive cases from requirements, user stories and business rules using systematic design techniques, and maintain traceability so stakeholders can see which requirements have been verified. In domains such as finance, insurance, healthcare and logistics, domain knowledge matters as much as testing technique, so testers learn the rules before they test them. Findings are reported in business language, so product owners can judge the impact of a defect without reading technical logs or reproducing it themselves.

What is included
Functional test coverage
Requirement traceability
Test cases linked to requirements or stories, showing coverage and verification status.
Business rule testing
Calculations, eligibility rules, tax logic and pricing verified with decision tables and boundary values.
Role and permission testing
Actions checked for each user role, including attempts to perform actions a role should not allow.
Validation and error handling
Field validations, mandatory rules, duplicate checks and error messages tested for clarity and correctness.
Workflow and state testing
Status transitions, approvals, cancellations and reversals verified through complete lifecycles.
How we work
How we deliver functional testing
Requirement review
Ambiguities and missing rules raised before development, when fixing them costs least.
Test design
Cases designed with coverage techniques and reviewed with business analysts.
Test data preparation
Data sets created for each rule variation, role and edge condition.
Execution and logging
Tests executed, evidence captured and defects raised with expected versus actual results.
Coverage report
Verified, failed and blocked requirements summarised for release decisions.

Regression Testing
Protecting existing functionality every time software changes, through risk-based regression suites, impact analysis, automation of stable checks and suite maintenance that keeps regression cycles short.
API Testing
Testing APIs directly for correct responses, business rules, error handling, security checks, contract compatibility and performance, using Postman, REST Assured, Karate or Pact in automated pipelines.
Integration Testing
Testing how modules, services and external systems work together, including data flows between applications, message queues, third-party APIs and batch interfaces, using service virtualisation where partners are unavailable.
Performance Testing
Measuring and improving how fast and efficiently applications respond, from backend response times and database queries to front-end rendering, with bottleneck analysis that explains why systems are slow.

Ask a questionFunctional testing verifies new or changed features against requirements. Regression testing checks that existing functionality still works after changes elsewhere in the system.
Testers work with business users to capture rules and expected behaviour, often producing documentation that the team lacked. Exploratory testing complements this where requirements remain unclear.
Stable functional tests can be automated after features settle. New features are usually tested manually first because behaviour and interfaces may still change.
As fixed-scope test cycles based on features and complexity, or through dedicated testers billed monthly for ongoing releases.
