Backend Engineering
Backend engineering builds server-side systems that hold business logic and data, including APIs, background processing, databases and caching.
Capability overview
What backend engineering involves
The back end decides whether an application gives correct answers under real conditions: two users editing the same record, a payment callback arriving twice, a report query running while hundreds of orders are placed, or a third-party service timing out. These situations rarely appear in demonstrations but define reliability in production.
We engineer back ends in Java with Spring Boot, C# with .NET, Node.js with NestJS, Python with Django or FastAPI, PHP with Laravel or Go, choosing based on your team and ecosystem. Designs cover transactional integrity, idempotent operations, queues for slow work, caching with Redis, observability and security controls such as input validation and secrets management.

What is included
Backend capabilities
Domain logic design
Business rules modelled explicitly and tested thoroughly, keeping them separate from frameworks and infrastructure.
Data consistency
Transactions, locking strategies and idempotency keys that prevent duplicates and lost updates.
Asynchronous processing
Queues and workers using RabbitMQ, Kafka, SQS or Redis for emails, reports, imports and integrations.
Caching and performance
Query optimisation, caching layers and pagination strategies for large datasets.
Security and observability
Authentication, authorisation checks, audit logging, structured logs, metrics and tracing.
How we work
How we deliver backend engineering
Domain discovery
Entities, rules, events and edge cases explored with business experts.
Service and data design
Modules, database schema, API contracts and messaging flows designed and reviewed.
Test-driven development
Critical rules covered by automated tests written alongside the code.
Load and failure testing
Concurrency, peak load and dependency failures simulated before release.
Production tuning
Slow queries, resource usage and error trends reviewed after launch and improved.
Related capabilities
Related capabilities in Software & Product Engineering
Full-Stack Development
Small, cross-functional teams of full-stack engineers who design and build complete features across interface, APIs, database and deployment, ideal for products that need speed without large handoffs.
API Development
Design and development of well-documented APIs for mobile apps, partners and internal systems, using REST, GraphQL or gRPC, with versioning, authentication, rate limiting and developer portals.
Microservices Architecture
Design and implementation of microservices where independent deployment and scaling are genuinely needed, including service boundaries, event-driven communication, data ownership and the platform required to operate them.
Database Design & Development
Relational and NoSQL database design, query optimisation, stored procedures, migrations and data modelling for applications, so data stays correct, fast to query and ready for reporting as volumes grow.

Questions about Backend Engineering
Cannot find what you need? Our team responds to technical and commercial questions within one business day.
Ask a questionThe best choice is usually the one your team can maintain and hire for. Java and .NET are strong for large enterprise systems, Node.js and Python for fast iteration and AI integration, and Go for high-performance services.
Using idempotency keys, unique constraints and careful transaction design, so repeated requests or webhook retries produce the same result instead of duplicated records or charges.
Yes. Profiling, query analysis and tracing usually identify a handful of bottlenecks, such as missing indexes or repeated queries, that account for most of the slowness.
Defined services are quoted as fixed-price projects. Performance investigations are a fixed fee, and ongoing backend development is typically delivered by a dedicated team.
